Many APC Governors Secretly Backing Opposition Coalition – Babachir Lawal

Speaking on behalf of the opposition alliance, Lawal said that prominent politicians across party lines are already on board.

 
Babachir Lawal, a former Secretary to the Government of the Federation has made a bold claim.
 
According to him, several leaders within the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), including sitting governors, are disenchanted with the party and are secretly supporting the newly formed opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
 
Lawal made the revelation during an appearance on Beyond the Headlines, a programme aired on TVC News on Tuesday evening.
 
His comments come barely a week after the coalition of opposition leaders formally adopted the African Democratic Congress (ADC) as its political platform to challenge the APC in the next election cycle.
 
Speaking on behalf of the opposition alliance, Lawal said that prominent politicians across party lines are already on board.
 
“Many are with us. Very, very many,” he stated confidently, adding that the group is not limited to known defectors. He claimed that even among sitting governors in the APC, many are secretly working with the coalition.
 
He insisted the coalition is not a personal attack on President Bola Tinubu, but a deliberate attempt to steer the country away from what he described as poor governance.

“This coalition isn’t just an anti-Tinubu project. Our goal is clear: Replace a non-performing government with one that serves Nigerians better,” Lawal declared.
 
The former SGF took aim at the leadership style within the APC, describing it as intolerant and suppressive of internal criticism.
 
He said, “APC has never been united. It’s a party bullied into silence. You can’t even advise them. The moment you raise dissent, you become the enemy.”
 
Among the coalition’s key figures are former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, Labour Party’s 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, former Senate President, David Mark, former Minister of Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, and ex-Minister of Transport, Rotimi Amaechi.
