Report has it that the Nigerian Senate had begun moves to scrap the Post Unified Matriculation Examination, UME (Post-UTME).

It was gathered that the Senate yesterday mandated its committee on Tertiary Education to meet with relevant stakeholders, especially the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and come up with recommendations on how to achieve the set goal.

According to the Senate, the move has become necessary because the introduction of the post – UME examination has to a large extent failed to solve the problems associated with JAMB admissions; adding that the existence of Post-UTME has posed more challenges for the Nigeria educational system.

These resolutions of the Senate Tuesday followed a motion by Senator Umaru l. Kurfi, APC, Katsina Central and entitled, “The Need to revisit the regulatory conflict between Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Universities in offering admission in Nigeria.”
In his presentation of the motion, Senator Umaru l. Kurfi noted that since the Post-UME policy was introduced as a remedy to the decay in educational standard in higher institutions of learning, there has been public outcry of extortion from candidates despite the rigorous test they pass through during JAMB exams.

He stressed that the integrity of the post -UME examination has become questionable as it seems the motive of the respective institutions is obviously to increase their income flows with it.

Recall that the Minister of Education earlier this year re-introduced Post-UTME aptitude test which was scrapped last year and now the Senate is making another move to scrap it again as a way of fighting what they call extortion of candidates.

The fact is that even without conducting Post-UTME Aptitude test per say, institutions will still demand fees for any other kind of screening like verifying of O’level result. Last year, there was no Post-UTME Aptitude test yet some schools demanded as high as N5000

from each candidate just to verify O’level results.

So unless the Senate will mandate institutions to stop demanding any fee at all for the screening exercise or direct JAMB to do all necessary screening and send the qualified candidates to the respective schools instead of playing this back and forth game.
