Nigerians shun “No Banking Day”

Nigerians appear to have ignored the “No Banking Day” campaign initiated by two advocacy groups through which they have called on Nigerians not to embark on any banking transaction today March 1.
The Consumer Advocacy Foundation of Nigeria and the Coalition of Nigeria Consumers Protection Association has called for a boycott of banking transaction over what they alleged are killing charges by banks in Nigeria over transactions by their depositors and other customers.
However, investigations by the Nigeria Politics Online indicate that banking activities have continued unabated in all parts of Nigeria with no signs that the traffic of customers have reduced as a result of the campaigns.
Some of the sponsors of the campaigns have featured on many radio and television channels today to further call attention to the calls for boycott.
Our correspondents who visited banks branches in Lagos reported that there is no sign that customers have heeded the call.
At a branch of First Bank in Ikeja, customers were seen as early as 8 am making their ways into the banking halls.
An official of the First Bank of Nigeria who pleaded not to be named said the campaigners have also chosen a wrong time for their campaigns.
“Today is March 1. Some people’s salaries were paid just on Monday and do you tell someone who has not paid school fees or rent or other critical needs not to access his money because of the campaign against charges?’ she demanded
In Abuja, the correspondent of the Nigeria Politics Online reported that normal banking activities remained unhindered as at 11am giving no indications that Nigerians were ready to obey the call.
In Ibadan, a branch of Zenith Bank along the popular Ring Road was besieged by customers.
This was the scenario in Osogbo. As early as 7.45am, customers had arrived waiting for entry at the UBA branch in Igbona Area of the state capital.
