According to the Nigeria Labour
Congress (NLC), if the currency stays weak and the economy is uncertain,
Nigerian workers would not care about a pay of ₦1 million per month.
In Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero announced this, emphasizing that the
real worth of wages has been erased by growing inflation. He contends
that strengthening the naira and enhancing living conditions should take
precedence above merely raising salaries.
"Even if Nigerian workers earn ₦1 million, it will not be meaningful if the naira has no value," he stated, emphasizing the necessity for a system that can support them throughout the month.
Ajaero bemoaned the skyrocketing expense of life, pointing out that necessities like housing, food, and transportation have grown more and more expensive. He attributed the worsening of the situation to increases in fuel prices, which had an impact on the entire economy.
Regarding the minimum wage controversy, he made it clear that there isn't any negotiation going on right now, stressing that the process is governed by the law and cannot be hurried for political purposes.
Before the present salary structure expires, he promised that negotiations would start at the proper moment. In order to protect Nigerians from shocks from around the world, the labor leader also called on the government to swiftly handle inflation and create a robust energy policy.
He expressed worries about the pension system's disarray brought on by the rise of several unions, stating that the NLC is working with stakeholders to ensure correct remittances and restore order. Ajaero claimed prior to Workers' Day that any protests would only take place in states that have not yet fully implemented the authorized minimum wage.
He pointed out implementation shortcomings, particularly in local government and the education sector, even if the majority of states have complied. Ajaero reiterated the NLC's position, stating that the congress is still dedicated to promoting laws that ensure the welfare of workers and economic stability.
