Nigerian Music Industry Not For The Weak โ€“ Jaywon

Nigerian Music Industry Not For The Weak – Jaywon

He urged artists not to leave social media because of trolls but to stay to promote their crafts.

Afrobeats singer Jaywon has made a confession.

He stated that the Nigerian music industry is not for “the weak”.

Jaywon pointed out that superstars like Davido, Wizkid, and Burna Boy are frequently trolled on social media, emphasizing that any artist who isn’t ready to face criticism won’t last in the industry.

He urged artists not to leave social media because of trolls but to stay to promote their crafts.

On his X handle on Sunday, the singer wrote, “Some of my colleagues call me to chat about the current state of the industry and how I handle all the ranting and disrespect online. My response is always the same: today’s industry is not for the weak.

“Just look at the level of disrespect thrown at artists like Davido, Wizkid, Burna Boy, and many others on social media. If you’re not prepared, you won’t last. They will always come for you, and the only real escape is to go offline but we can’t do that. This is our life, our craft, and no matter what, we will keep pushing forward!”

PDP Governors Head For Supreme Court Over Rivers Emergency Rule

PDP Governors Head For Supreme Court Over Rivers Emergency Rule

The suit, to be filed at the supreme court this week, names the national assembly as the second defendant.

Governors under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) will challenge President Bola Tinubu's state of emergency declared in Rivers State.

This comes after the governors instructed lawyers to file a suit against the president to challenge the declaration of emergency rule in Rivers state.

According to TheCable, the suit, to be filed at the supreme court this week, names the national assembly as the second defendant.

On March 18, President Bola Tinubu declared a state of emergency in the south-south state, citing the prolonged political crisis and vandalisation of oil installations.

The president suspended Siminalayi Fubara, governor of the state; Ngozi Odu, his deputy; and all house of assembly members for six months.

Tinubu also appointed Ibok-Ete Ibas, a retired vice-admiral, as the sole administrator for Rivers.

On Thursday, the senate and the house of representatives controversially approved Tinubu’s request for the emergency rule.

The PDP governors vowed to challenge the emergency rule in court at its virtual meeting on Wednesday.

PDP GOVERNORS GO TO SUPREME COURT

The suit will be initiated by PDP governors from Bauchi, Adamawa, Bayelsa, Enugu, Osun, Plateau, and Zamfara states, TheCable can report.

As already reported by TheCable, based on a previous ruling of the country’s highest court, Fubara is unable to join the suit because he would need authorisation from the current administration in Rivers — a clear impossibility as the administrator reports directly to the president who is being sued by the PDP governors.

They are praying the court to declare that based on the provisions of sections 1(2), 5(2), and 305 of the constitution “the President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria has no powers whatsoever or vires to suspend a democratically elected governor and deputy governor of a state in the federation of Nigeria under the guise of or pursuant to the proclamation of a state of emergency in the state of the federation by the president, including the states of the federation represented by the plaintiffs”.

They are also praying the court to declare that the president has no power to suspend a democratically elected house of assembly of a state pursuant to Sections 192 (4) (6) and 305 of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended).

The plaintiffs also want the apex court to declare the suspension of Fubara, his deputy and members of the Rivers state assembly “unconstitutional, unlawful, illegal and utterly in gross violation of the provisions of the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 (as amended)…”

The governors are challenging the appointment of a sole administrator for the state, asserting that the president lacks the constitutional power to make such an appointment. Consequently, they seek the court’s ruling to nullify Ibok-Ete Ibas’ appointment as Rivers state’s sole administrator.

The plaintiffs argue that the defendant’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State did not comply with the constitutional requirements set by Section 305 of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended).

They assert that the proclamation failed to meet the stipulated conditions and procedures for such a declaration and was made for reasons beyond those specified in the said constitutional provision.

They further argue that the national assembly’s approval of the state of emergency via a voice vote is invalid, insisting that the constitution mandates a two-thirds majority vote from all members of each legislative chamber.

“An order of this honourable court nullifying the proclamation of a state of emergency in Rivers state made by the 1st defendant and wrongfully approved by the 2nd defendant,” the plaintiffs are further seeking.

“An order of this honourable court restraining the defendant, by himself, servants, agents and privies from implementing the unlawful suspension of the governor and deputy governor of Rivers state.

“An order of this honourable court restraining the defendant, by himself, servants, agents and privies from interfering in any manner whatsoever with the execution by the governor and deputy governor of Rivers state of their constitutional and statutory duties, as well as their electoral mandate.

“An order of this honourable court restraining the Defendant from attempting the suspension of any other governor of any state in Nigeria, particularly the plaintiffs and any governor not belonging to the ruling political party, or in any manner whatsoever attempting to interfere with or undermine their constitutional and statutory duties.”

It is unclear if the governors have the locus standi to institute the suit as none of them is affected by the state of emergency.

But insiders say they are determined to test the law “for the sake of posterity”.

A Nigerian businessman, Onyelike Darlington has narrated how he ordered the arrest of a young man for assaulting a pastor who preached against “carrying women.”

According to Onyelike, the young man who was deported from Europe claimed that the pastor's words affected him badly because all his babes had abandoned him.

“I ordered the arrest of one young man this morning who assaulted one of my pastors and attempted to attack him with dangerous weapons. On arrival to the venue with the police, the young man was holding a dangerous weapon to attack my pastor. When I wanted to move him to State CID, he begged that nobody would come for him.

Then I engaged him in a peaceful discussion, and he opened up that he is not married and he was deported from Europe and my pastor was preaching against carrying women and it affected him badly because his babes don run finish.

I laughed, and then I cautioned him, gave him 20k, and drove him to church today, and we worshipped God together in our branch church. Everything is not violence in this Tinubu regime. Make person no die for our hand,” he wrote.

BREAKING: Court Stalls Trial As Police Fail To Produce TikToker 'Tumma' In Court Over Alleged Insult On Sanwo-Olu, IGP

BREAKING: Court Stalls Trial As Police Fail To Produce TikToker 'Tumma' In Court Over Alleged Insult On Sanwo-Olu, IGP

Gabriel has been in solitary confinement for over a month following his arrest on charges of making defamatory statements about Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

Timothy Gabriel, Kayode Egbetokun

The Nigeria Police Force, NPF, failed to produce popular TikToker, TikToker, Timothy Gabriel, also referred to as ‘Tumma’, in court for his trial, on Monday, prompting the judge to adjourn the proceedings until April 29, 2025.

Gabriel has been in solitary confinement for over a month following his arrest on charges of making defamatory statements about Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun.

A source present at the court session confirmed the adjournment, stating, “We have just come from the court, and the police did not present him, leading the judge to reschedule the case for April 29.”

In light of increasing public discontent, an X user named Larry, who is closely monitoring the situation, criticized the police and called for Gabriel’s immediate release.

The Federal High Court in Abuja had originally set the hearing for March 24, 2025.

Documents obtained by SaharaReporters indicate that the IGP is both the complainant and the primary instigator of the case. He accuses Gabriel of cyberstalking under the Cybercrimes (Prevention, Prohibition, etc.) Act 2025, as amended in 2024.

In the first count, Gabriel is charged with making a false claim that the Lagos State Governor is an armed robber involved in embezzling state funds. This allegation, posted on his TikTok account, OFFICIAL_TUMMA, is said to have been intended to tarnish the governor’s reputation. It falls under Section 24(2)(a) and is punishable according to Section 24(2)(c)(i) of the Cybercrimes Act.

Count Two: Gabriel faces allegations of sharing a video intended to damage the reputation of the Inspector General of Police (IGP), an act that is also subject to penalties under the Cybercrimes Act. Gabriel was apprehended on February 6, 2025, when heavily armed officers raided his residence in Mpape, Abuja.

He was subsequently moved to the Cybercrime Centre of the Nigeria Police Force.

According to SaharaReporters, sources revealed that IGP Egbetokun initiated Gabriel’s arrest due to remarks made in his videos.
Despite being held for over a month, he has not been granted bail, raising alarms about potential human rights infringements and the abuse of authority to suppress dissent.

The recent developments on Monday intensified concerns that the police may be intentionally obstructing legal processes to prolong Gabriel’s detention indefinitely.

INEC Holds Meeting Over Petition To Recall Kogi Central Senator

INEC Holds Meeting Over Petition To Recall Kogi Central Senator

The meeting follows the receipt of the petition, which was submitted by the Secretary to the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, on Monday.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) is holding a meeting to discuss a petition seeking the recall of the lawmaker representing Kogi Central, Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

According to The Guardian, INEC’s Acting Director of Publicity, Esther Chibuikem, confirmed the meeting, which is taking place at the commission’s headquarters in Abuja.

The meeting follows the receipt of the petition, which was submitted by the Secretary to the Commission, Rose Oriaran-Anthony, on Monday.

The latest development comes after the Federal High Court sitting in Lokoja, Kogi State, overturned an earlier ruling that had restrained INEC from proceeding with the recall process initiated by constituents from Kogi Central Senatorial District.

In a judgment delivered on Friday, the court affirmed that the recall process is constitutionally valid and aligns with the civic rights of the constituents.

The court further urged the constituents to continue exercising their rights in a peaceful and orderly manner.

This legal battle had previously seen the court grant an interim injunction on Thursday, which restrained INEC, its staff, agents, and representatives from accepting or acting on any petition containing signatures from the Kogi Central Senatorial District.

With the ruling now overturned, the way is clear for the petition to be considered and acted upon, in accordance with the constitutional rights of the people of Kogi Central.

The outcome of the meeting at INEC’s headquarters could have significant implications for the political future of Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan.

Court Stops INEC From Receiving Petition for Recall of Natasha

Court Stops INEC From Receiving Petition for Recall of Natasha

Reacting to the development, a pressure group, Action Collective, commended the judiciary for granting the order.

The Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC has been restrained from receiving petitions for the purpose of initiating a recall process against Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan.

The interim injunction was given by a Federal High Court in Lokoja.

Recall that the push to recall the suspended senator intensified on Thursday, with more groups in Kogi Central throwing their weight behind the process.

However, a group of Ebira indigenes refuted the claim that the recall process was being sponsored and influenced with money by Akpoti-Uduaghan’s political opponents.

Nevertheless, the court, which gave the order on Thursday, also restricted INEC staff, agents, privies, or assigns from accepting or acting on any petition containing fictitious signatures of purported members of the Kogi Central Senatorial District and from conducting any referendum pending the determination of the motion on notice to the same effect.

The court, according to the order paper made available to newsmen on Friday morning, granted the application following an ex-parte application for an interim injunction supported by an affidavit of extreme urgency.

The court processes were sworn to by Anebe Jacob Ogirima for himself and four others who are registered voters and constituents of the Kogi Central Senatorial District of Kogi State.

However, the application was moved by Smart Nwachimere, Esq., of West-Idahosa, SAN & Co., but the case has been adjourned to May 6, 2025, for a report of service and further mention.

Reacting to the development, a pressure group, Action Collective, commended the judiciary for granting the order.

The group’s coordinator, Dr. Onimisi Ibrahim, said in his reaction that the order would further expose the impunity of some sponsored individuals behind the failed plot to recall Senator Natasha.

Rivers Crisis: Umeh Denies Receiving Dollar to Support State of Emergency

Rivers Crisis: Umeh Denies Receiving Dollar to Support State of Emergency

Umeh warned Sahara Reporters to desist from blackmailing him, stating that this was the third time.

Senator Victor Umeh, representing Anambra Central Senatorial District, has reacted to allegations that senators received dollars to support the state of emergency declared by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in Rivers State.

Speaking in a statement, Umeh denied the claim.

He warned Sahara Reporters to desist from blackmailing him, stating that this was the third time the outfit had published false information about him.

Sahara Reporters, an online news outfit, had on Wednesday reported that senators collected bribes amounting to $10,000 to approve the president’s decision to suspend the governor of Rivers State, Siminalayi Fubara.

The newspaper also alleged that Senator Umeh s among the senators disbursing the money to other senators at the private lodge of the Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, in Abuja.

However, in response, Umeh stated that he did not receive any money to support the approval of the state of emergency in Rivers State and was not present at the alleged meeting on Wednesday where $10,000 was reportedly distributed to 42 senators, let alone being one of the key figures who organized the event.

He said: “I did not receive any money to support the approval of the state of emergency in Rivers State. I was not at any meeting where such payments were allegedly made.”

Umeh explained that on the evening of Tuesday, he attended the traditional Iftar (breaking of fasting) gathering at the Senate Guest House with their Muslim brothers and sisters, where he was asked to say the Christian prayer after Senator Adamu Aliero had said the Muslim prayer at the conclusion of the Iftar.

“I prayed for God to grant peace to all parts of Nigeria and reconciliation to all the warring parties in Rivers State.

“I prayed for love and for all Nigerians to embrace one another for the good of our nation. We did not discuss a state of emergency in Rivers State at the Iftar. There were other Labour Party senators at the Iftar.”

The senator described the Sahara Reporters story as blackmail, stressing that it did not represent the truth.

He assured his constituents that such reports would not distract him from providing good representation, adding that the aim of the detractors was to create disaffection between him and the people and to impugn his reputation.

“This is not the first time Sahara Reporters has published false information about me. It’s becoming serial blackmail, and I’m warning them to stop. I will not be distracted by their false reports, and I will continue to serve my constituents with dignity and integrity,” Umeh declared.
